This environment flows down from the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap, with ice depth reaching up to 200 meters (656 feet) in the thickest sections. The surface is heavily streaked with black ash from historic volcanic eruptions.

You must have a certified guide to walk on the ice. Tour operators supply the required crampons, helmet, and ice axe needed to navigate the hazardous terrain safely.
